I was told this engine was a good running engine and just had a leaking push rod tube.  I was supposed to pull the head and replace the push rod tubes.

After finding a hole in the push rod tube I thought this might be the case.

Here’s end clearance on the motor.

But I saw this right off the bat.  You can see the burnt oil around the valve.   See why this happens in the next pic.

the valve seal is all burned up.  See why in the next pic.

The valve guide is extremely worn.  You can see how large it is compared with the other one.  Of course there is a minor crack between the valve seats also.

And this valve had some pitting.

And this valve was burned.  Kinda melted and distorted.  Probably due to valves not being adjusted as they should.

Also in this pic you can see carbon built up on part of the head sealing surface.  This means it was leaking.  Probably sounded like an exhaust leak but it was a compression leak.

You can see the same thing on the jugs.

And the cylinder had a nice little crack in it too.
